Here is a compilation that I use when cutting my gems.. if you find yourself needing a cut.. use this to reference the type of gem you will need to get the desired result... the exact result(buff/stat) for any given class of gems is a random proc upon cutting it. So you may need more than 1 gem if you are hoping to get one of the more rare effects.

Gemcutting 101

Tier 1 - level 40-49 - Field of the Dead or Noble District
Tier 2 - level 50-59 - Eiglophian Mountains
Tier 3 - level 60-69 - Thunder River, Atzel's Approach
Tier 4 - level 70-74 - Atzel's Approach, Keshatta
Tier 5 - level 75-79 - Keshatta
Tier 6 - level 80+ - Keshatta (gems are listed as lvl75)

Gem Size
Each crafted item will have a gem size, this size is the maximum size a SINGLE gem can be.
As for gems, you have to divide their size by 5 for it to correspond with their actual size.
Therefore, flawless gems are really size 2 and uncut are size 1!

Damage Procs (flawless gems only)
Arcing - electrical dd - A7,B7
Corruptive - unholy dd - C1
Envenoming - poison dd
Defiling - unholy dd - A1, B1
Destructive - crushing dd
Gelid - cold dd - A2, B2
Flaring - fire dd
Rending - slashing dot
Retributive = piercing dd - C3
Ripping - crushing dot - C3
Scalding - fire dd
Sacrarial - temp increase immunities - C5
Shocking - electrical dd - C7
Venomous - poison dd - A1, B1
Wrathful - holy dd - A8, B8

Defensive Stats
Algid - + coldimmunity - C4
Dense - + piercing immunity - C3
Grounding - + electrical immunity - C7
Immutable - + cold/fire/electrical/holy/unholy immunity - C5
